This three-hour workshop will introduce the participants to basic legal principles, rules, and issues encountered by new small businesses in the following areas:
- Business Organizations (proprietorships, companies, and partnerships)
- Tort Law (civil wrongs such as motor vehicle collisions, libel & slander, etc.)
- Contract Law (required elements of a contract, and specific types of contracts)
- Commercial Tenancies (rent, duration, quiet enjoyment, and renewal)
- Secured Financing (security agreements, priorities, enforcement, and disputes)
- Guarantees and Indemnities (definitions, specific rules, and enforcement)
- Employment Law (hiring and firing, and wrongful dismissal)
- Damages (the amount of compensation awarded to the innocent party)
- Bankruptcy (when all else fails …)
- British Columbia court system (basic overview of the procedures and steps in civil lawsuits in Small Claims Court and in Supreme Court)
Questions from the participants are welcome and encouraged, and often help to illustrate the practical application of the corresponding legal principles. The sheer volume of information covered during the workshop means that it proceeds at a relatively fast pace.
